It's Official!

Summer is hot here in the Valley...103 yesterday.  Just after 1200 and it's 93 out there.

We've been keeping an eye on the pauraque down by the back gate.  She kept moving her nest...Last we say was in the middle of the drive last Saturday.  But she's gone now.  I can't imagine why any bird would want to lay eggs in direct sunlight.  I know that the one egg we saw looked just like the rocks she was sitting on.

Pauraque near fence by back gate

Jim has been painting, not a job he cares for, but the Clubhouse looks ever so much better.  It's a lighter color than the yellowish shade it was before.

He's now working on the North laundry and it's going to match the clubhouse

That's our rig, just wanted to show you how tall the Mexican Bird of Paradise is on the site next to us.  It apparently thrives in this weather.  As does the Esperanza

All of the palm trees here and at Retama have been trimmed.  Also all those on the frontage road.  I wonder how long it will take for them to look like palm trees again?  I'll let you know!

Because.....it's official, we're working the winter season in guest services again.

Stunning Sunrise

Our weekend was quiet...of course every day is pretty much quiet!  Not many folks are staying here.  A couple of rigs and I think two casitas.  Don and Jeni are the perfect hosts!  They don't bother us and we don't bother them.  You know, we older couples like our spouses and have gotten used to our routines.

Saturday and Sunday we had gorgeous sunrises.  There was a weather system that gave us clouds but very little rain.

This picture was taken Sunday morning and I couldn't believe how nice it was outside.  Around 0730 I went for a walk and the temperature was only 71.  By the time I'd walked a mile and returned home it was 76..and it continued to rise.  We're getting into the upper 90's most days.

Have you ever been plagued by ants?  We can't seem to get rid of them and I'm pretty sure we've had them off and on for a couple years.  I've found them in the wash machine, shower, our bed but mostly in our kitchen.

We ended yesterday by watching PBS and eating popcorn.  Today was laundry day for me.  I stripped the bed and dusted the bedroom.

How was your 4th of July?

Ours was quiet. Stayed home and enjoyed 'traditional ' food.  Jim had hotdogs and potato salad while I had a veggie burger and a cucumber tomato salad.  We both had beer and pretzels!  While we ate we watched Independence Day...one of our favorite movies.

Yesterday and today have been quiet.  We do our chores and play games...

Found out the crew taking care of the palm trees are just doing those.  They've done quite a few over in Retama and they look silly.  But driving around town I've seen others trimmed this way.  Apparently several years worth of fronds are cut off leaving just this years growth.

Bit of excitement today...we had to replace our sewer hose.  A trip to Wally world and we're good to go.  Also picked up paraphernalia so we can put our screen back on and leave the awning out.  This side of the rig gets the full sun all morning and I'm hoping this will keep us 'cooler' for a bit.  The AC comes on early and runs all day.

While fooling with this outside I discovered a hole in the ground...thought we had us a snake but apparently it's just a very big toad!

This was taken last Christmas Day on Padre Island...looks refreshing

Happy 4th of July!

I'm sorry I haven't been blogging.  Just isn't much to write about.  Last week was a hot one here and I understand it was hotter than normal for this time of year.  Make no mistake, it's still hot here. Temperatures have been in the upper 90's and by afternoon we pass the triple digits. But it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. There isn't much humidity to deal with during the day. Of course we spend  little time outdoors!  Jim gets his work done around noon.  Comes home, showers and then we enjoy each other's company while the temperature climbs.

While Jim is out in the mornings I take care of my chores and squeeze in some time for my card making.  I've just posted some new stuff under Paper Crafts and if you click on that page you can see what I've been making. These four are just a sample.

We finally bought a card reader for the laptop and I don't have to rely on my phone for pictures.  Hopefully I'll be posting more of my work and update you on the growth of the landscaping in the resort soon. Despite the lack of rain everything is growing and looking better than last month after they hacked all the bushes.

Yesterday a crew arrived to trim all the trees. I look forward to seeing this done!  They'll rid the palms of dead fronds and the flowering stalks and fruit. The later makes a big mess, much like the Texas olive tree fruit.  Not sure if they'll tackle the other trees, time will tell.

Whatever your plans are today, enjoy and remember our freedom isn't free.  Men and women have given their all for this privilege.

All is right in our world!

Higher and Higher

When you're hot, you're hot!  As each day passes our temperatures climb.  Lately we've been reaching the upper 90's with the nights in the 70's.  During the day the humidity drops and by afternoon we're enjoying fells like temperatures of 100+.  So we don't go outside unless we have too.

Jim has been getting up at 0700 so he can get his chores done outside before noon.  The pool needs tidying everyday what with debris from the trees (wind blows almost constantly.  And the past few days he's been pressure washing the Club House so it can be painted.

The crew that keeps up the grounds were busy the first week of June cutting and trimming all of the bushes.  Don't worry, they'll be back and looking gorgeous by the time the winter season starts!

Upper left is our rig in the 100's.

These pictures were taken on the 8th of June.  As you can see it's looking pretty bare.  Already I've seen new growth around the resort

After Jim does his morning work he comes home and showers.  Sometimes he naps as he's lying on the bed cooling off.  Sometimes we have our midday meal together before he naps (not good for the waistline!).

I read, make cards, snooze during this time.  When he's gone in the morning I'm usually busy with housework, meal prep, bathing and trimming Boo.  I even squeeze in craft time.

Netflix is our choice for afternoon viewing.  We like England's BBC TV shows and we're enjoying some dramas, comedies and a show Grand Designs (I think) about building or rebuilding grand houses. Fascinating!

Let's see, In the past couple weeks we've mostly stayed at home.  Venturing out only for groceries.  One day we headed to the mall so I could get a haircut and we both got some steps in.  One grocery run found us at Costco and we walked all over that cool building.  I walked all over Barnes and Nobles while Jim reads magazines and that day I managed to get more steps than him.

Yesterday we went out to lunch.  Decided on Chili's because we had a gift card.  About the only good thing I can say about Chili's is they have good margarita's and cold draft beer.  Why is everything they cook so greasy?

New Phone, Different (old) Laptop

Awhile back I got a new phone, Samsung Galaxy S7.  It has taken me several weeks of thinking (I'm slow) of how to import pictures from my phone onto this older, former Asus laptop.  I think I know how to upload pictures from my cameras but I'll have to purchase a doohickey to do it.

My newer laptop, Dell I think, has stopped working.  For awhile it was troublesome...taking two or three tries to even start it.  We'd reboot and finally it would work.  Couple times we'd took the battery out and then it would work.  Now nothing works....by we, I mean Jim of course, he's my go to tech guy!  Love you honey.

For the time being we're remaining in the valley.  The reasons are personal but not medical.  We're still at Bentsen Palm Village RV Resort.  Not much going on here and we've only a few guests.

These pictures aren't the best but at least I know how to share them!

Baby possum found in our water  collection bucket.  Jim dumped him out and he played possum while we waited for signs of life.  About a half hour later he was gone.

Can You Believe It?

It's June 1st.....and summer is definitely here in the Rio Grande Valley.  Hope you're enjoying summer-like weather where you are.

Summer means we'll being cooking out, finding places to and ways to cool off and traveling!  Schools are dismissing students and closing down.  Summer! What's not to like?

We should be on the road soon. As many of you know Jim has a doctor appointment today and once that's taken care of we can move on.  But wait! We must get our mail one more time and that won't be here until Friday.

Are we ready to hit the road? Yes and no. Repairs and maintenance have been done on the truck and rig.  So they're road worthy. Most everything is tucked away and we could hit the road in an hour or so.

But I'm learning that I like settling in.  We've been in the valley since late October. Prior to that, summer was spent in Vermont with Anne and Scotty. That's where we were a year ago today.  Before we headed to Vermont we had been guests of our children, Sonsearae and Chris, for Jim's recovery.

Even though our life isn't constantly in motion, I find I like routines.  I've also come to realize that there isn't enough time or resources to see and do everything in one lifetime!

We both need medical attention and when you travel you have to keep this in mind. I rather like developing a relationship with medical personnel.  And going to the same grocery store, gas station and favorite restaurants etc....routines established for ease of life.

So far Jim wants to travel and thus far we can't decide on where to go next!  From here Corpus Christi...but in general we have no plans.

Perhaps we'll just go where the wind takes us, like a ship lost at sea trying to find a home port.

Last week we had the rig in for repairs on the brakes. We spent the night in Bert Ogden's parking lot and turned over the rig at 0800.   As it happened the day was wonderful weather wise.  We sat in a shaded parking lot all morning reading or playing games on our tablets. Then headed out at lunchtime for some Popeye's chicken.  Back to the park to enjoy a picnic lunch. As the afternoon warmed up we headed back to Ogden's and discovered we couldn't get our rig back.  So we packed essentials (but still managed to forget some items) and searched for a place to stay.  Managed to endure a stay at a hotel over night.  Because of Boo we ended up eating a lot of fast food and boy did we tire of that quickly.

Wrong parts and a promise to finish up the second day saw us taking our rig home after two full days of being homeless.  Oh it was fine sleeping that night in our own bed!

Time for Change

As you know, awhile back, we got a pair of recliners.  I must say they are quite comfortable and we've grown to like them.  I'm still not crazy about how the fabric feels.  Perhaps my skin is just to sensitive.

Anyway, we still had to do something with the leather lounger as it won't fit with the slides in.  The only other choice was to put it back in it's previous position and since it needed some TLC we decided to just get rid of it.

We found it a new home!

Wow!  we have a lot more space but you can see 'I' need more storage space for what was hidden behind our furniture.

We previously had our chairs side by side but after removing the lounger we split them up.  Jim's chair is on the left while mine is on the right

See all my stuff?  At least now it's easier to get to.

Jim is happy to have his table back.

This week the rig has to go get it's brakes fixed. I don't know the details but Jim  does and says the brake drums need doing.  Our rig is getting on in years and maintenance has to be done.  We may be able to park at Bert Ogden overnight which will save us from having to be there at 0800.  Hopefully it will be done in one day.

Boo is currently battling fleas....I guess his flea medicine doesn't work as well as the box claims.  Daily I take a slow, sluggish flea off of him and tend to his bites.  He's back on benadryl so we can all get some sleep...but the poor critter spends a lot of time keeping us awake as he scratches and licks.

Our days have been warming up!  That's to be expected but so are the nights.  The AC cycles on and off all night long keeping us cool.  I walked outside this morning when I opened the door and my glasses fogged up.  The humidity goes up at night and this morning it was high.

Down In the Valley

We're still at BPRV!  We've had some very warm days but for the most part our weather has been wonderful.

Jim get's out and about everyday tending to the gates and pool.  Since I'm OVER the sciatica I stay busy with my chores and card making.  Because I have a few cards I'm also mailing out a couple a week to family and friends.

Seriously, having sciatica pain is very, very uncomfortable and I'm pleased to report that I no longer needs meds or the Tens Unit.  Of course I still have two arthritic hips that will always plague me....just getting old!  Right now my left hip is the bothersome one.  Causing enough pain to get me out of bed after eight hours or so.  Then I plunk down in my recliner with a heating pad and enjoy my coffee.

Every morning we sit at our table, on our laptops, and enjoy the birds.  Jim moved our feeding station so we can see it from the dining room table.  We've turned the table and sit side by side.  Mostly sparrows and doves.  But Green Jays, Bronzed Cowbirds (love their red eyes!), Greater Kiskadees and even Chachalaca come by.  Of course those dad gum squirrels help themselves daily.  The hummingbirds love the Mexican Bird of Paradise and it's fun watching them flit around.

Oh, the occasional Javalina strolls through too.  I can see one over in the first circle right now

Besides ourselves there are two other rigs here...unless they checked out while I wasn't looking.  It's so peaceful walking around the resort with only the  sounds of nature to be heard.

That's about it from here.  We're eating out a lot...and gaining weight!  This must not continue   LOL

We still have no plans for our traveling.  Corpus Christi if we head north.  But we might head west....who knows

Stampin' Up!

I promise, I have been playing with my paper supplies, but some of them aren't SU.  I'm trying to use my stash and what better way than making and sending note cards to friends and family.

These two cards are made with the Beautiful You Stamps that can be either wood mounted or used with clear blocks.  There is a price difference.  I use mostly clear blocks as it takes up less room to store.  Also, this set has 13 stamps.  Three ladies and 8 sayings and two 'squiggles' that are stamped over the image as in the card on the right

The note cards (5 x 3 1/2 inches) can be bought in packs of 20.  I used Sweet Sugarplum ink.

Just a plain and simple card to help keep in touch with loved ones.

Head over to my site to order, or contact me for more information

Weather here in the Valley

It's really nippy outside!  Yesterday our high topped out around 94 degrees.  Right now it's 62 outside, no sun and a slight breeze out of the North West.  Predicted high?  79 degrees!!  I love it...we also had some rain over night.  I love hearing it on the roof...lulled me right back to sleep.

This will last a couple days and by mid week we could see temperatures top 100.

The last two days have been good for me.  I made some soup and froze some for later.  I've been able to do my chores (dang) and even managed a couple of walks.  I know the walking helps keep me in shape, but it also helps keep my hips from hurting so much.  The sciatica is still lingering (toes are numb and at times my left calf is painful) but isn't as debilitating as it once was.  If it never comes back I'll be one happy camper.

Now that our neighbors have pulled out I can enjoy their flowers.  Anne's site has a beautiful bougainvillea and a hedge of  a plant I can't remember the name of.  I miss Anne and Scotty,

 but I'm enjoying the view.

Bentsen Palm Resort has been planted with trees, bushes and local flora to attract birds and butterflies.  One of the World Birding Centers is at the Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park practically across the road from us.  Down the street is the National Butterfly Center.

Migration is an interesting time here.  Both Autumn and Spring.  They do a hawk count at the state park and that event brings folks from all over.  Birders 'flock' to the area during migrations!

It's 0930 and I guess I'll have to pry Jim out of bed.  He must have had a rough night.  His alarm went off and he just turned if off and went back to bed two hours ago.

Long Overdue Update

This seems to be the easiest way to update all my friends and family about my condition....Apparently I'm going to be blessed with pain (perhaps daily) for the rest of my natural life.  I do have some days where I have hours that I'm pain free but I have to work at it.  Medication (naproxen or tylenol), Lidocaine patches, Tens Unit, Heating Pad and ice packs are part of my daily routine now.

I suppose I could just sit in my recliner all day but even that becomes uncomfortable after awhile!

Jim is very helpful and when needed does my chores.  We've been eating out quite a bit and at home we're eating MRE'S.  Meals Ready to Eat from the freezer section of the grocery store.  Standing and prepping foods to cook can be quite uncomfortable.  I'm surprised I haven't gained weight from all the 'comfort' foods.  I've decided, when I can, I'll chop and dice and fix foods I should eat (Jim Too!) so they'll be ready in the fridge or freezer.

To that end I bought an Instant Pot from Amazon...I've not used it but once and made some fried rice that turned out pretty good.  I just need to find recipes that I can veganize and I'll be good to go.  Sonsearae helps with this.

Enough about me!

Jim is officially working...not difficult, but he takes care of the pool and gates and has a golf cart.  Last night we rode around the resort and it's pretty empty around here.  About six rigs with people in them.  A lot of folks (snowbirds) leave their rigs here.

Anne and Scotty left a couple days ago, heading to Kentucky to visit friends before they head to Vermont.  Of the work campers only three couples remain.

Boo and I continue to suffer periodically from bug bites.  I think his have all cleared up so it's time for a bath.  Keeping him medicated internally and externally is a chore but we don't get much sleep if he scratches all night.

Do what you can
Where you are

Where Were You?

A year Ago?   When you travel it's hard to remember exactly but by keeping this blog up to date I know we were still in Stuart Florida...we both like that town and area.  I miss the weekly Farmer's Market

Last Tuesday was the last visit by the produce guy.  I bought a fresh pineapple for three dollars!  All I had to do was slice it.  They have this handy, dandy machine that takes the outer 'peel' off and cores it too.  Also bought a cucumber (which I found frozen in the drawer!)

Our resort is emptying out.  Pretty soon we'll have the place almost to ourselves!  Right now we plan on leaving in June.  Doctor appointments and repairs need to be completed.  Some of the work campers will linger for a few days and then they'll hit the road too.

We're off to have pizza with the Scott's, soon they'll be leaving too

Thanks for stopping by!

It's Sunday Again!

I can't believe it's been a week since I posted...Oh well, I'll blame it on my pain

Yes, I'm still battling this sciatica.  Some days are better than others and I guess I'll just have to put up with it.  Sitting around like an invalid can't be good for my overall wellness

This past week we've seen a lot of folks leaving the resort and today....around 0800 two work camping couples left.  Jim was awakened by Bruce tooting his horn and Boo barking!  I went out and got hugs and said safe travels to Bruce, Diane, Karen and Howard.  I was still in my jammies and along with several folks not ready to start the day!

Biscuits for breakfast and Jim has gone to open guest services.  This will be our last shift.

Boo is being bitten again (me too) and we have him on benadryl.  It helps all of us sleep better!

The days are heating up, getting into the 90's this week.  Not much in the way of humidity during the day but it's still uncomfortable mid afternoon to be outside.  I think that's why the siesta was invented!

I better post this and get the day started before my medication wears off

The Weekend is Upon Us

The weather has been wonderful the last few days. I only wish I could be out more to enjoy it.  My battle with this sciatica pain is ongoing.  The tens unit helps but it's doing nothing to 'heal' it.  The past couple of evenings I've sat in the hot tub and that is heavenly.  For ten-fifteen minutes I float and there is no pain.

We're working today and tomorrow and that's really not exciting, as most have left for their travels. North, west...wherever.  Soon all our neighbors will be gone. Not much mail coming in and nothing to keep us busy except signing out bikes and park passes. We take our tablets and read, play games or watch movies.  The WiFi at the office is fast!

Spring is really bursting out here.  The showers we've had in recent weeks has made it's presence known. The trees, flowers and bushes are leafing out and once again it's green again.  I like that!  Much to drab and brown during winter.

Took some time yesterday to finish up some cards.  The larger ones are from Club Scrap, the other two are trade cards.

Lovely Weather

Last Friday we picked up our new rocker recliners from Lazy Boy.  The two of us even managed to get them in the house all by ourselves!  They're a good color  but they don't match our orange speckled rug.  Apparently I have to adjust myself to this change.  I'm sitting in a different location beside Jim instead of the end of the rig.  I can't use my computer table because of the bump from the slide.  We both have our laptops set up on the dining room table and sitting on that chair is awkward for me....my feet don't touch the floor!

On Saturday we had a rainy day...it rained all day and I'm sure the trees, bushes and plants loved it.  Now we're enjoying mild temperatures and it looks like Spring.

On Monday I went to the VA and was instructed on how to use a Tens Unit.  I wasn't in there long and I left with a four lead Unit.  It comes with batteries, charger for said batteries and the leads and pads. I was also given extra pads that I can get from any VA clinic.  All I had to do was charge the batteries when I got home.

Which I forgot.  On the way home we stopped at the Post Office to mail a package of Stampin' Up! catalogs to Terry.  Jim then drove to Bed Bath and Beyond  where we bought a gel cushion for me to sit on.  We've contemplated buying one before for traveling.  One more stop at Sam's Club for tomato sauce and we then headed home.  Once we pulled into our site a neighbor invited us to her site for happy hour....first we had a bite to eat because drinking beer was involved!  That's why I forgot to charge the batteries!

This morning, as soon as I thought I could, I asked Jim to 'hook' me up.  Because the pain is on the left side the pads had to be on my backside.  He did a fine job putting the pads on and attaching the leads and after a few minutes of re-reading the instructions I finally was able to turn the machine on.

I've used it off and on during the day and I must say it does work.  It will not take the pain away but it 'masks' it for awhile and I can stand and do chores without to much fuss.  Better than taking addictive pain killers.

We went to HEB this morning and I did well.  Using and wearing (carry in pocket or clip to waistband) this machine will take some getting used to.  I can change the intensity and duration of time.  I have to find what works best for me.

Jim has been wonderful in helping me with my chores and I love him dearly....cuz he stills loves me even when I snap at him.  It's no fun being in pain!

I'm not sure if this pain will ever go away but at least now I can get some relief from it

Stampin' Up!

It's Sale-A-Bration Time!  That means the more you spend the more free product you earn.  New items were added February 21st.  I especially like Delicate Details, 5 stamps you can use to add a 'delicate' touch to any card

Check out my website to see what you could choose as a gift for yourself or a friend.  Ordering is easy, just pick the items, add your personal information and pay with a credit card.  I'll never see the credit card information if that's a concern.

I've been out of the loop, so to speak, on Stampin' Up! products and when I received my Demonstrator packet included was a Paper Pumpkin Kit from August 2016.

This kit had everything to make the card you see on the top, the note card on the left and the gift card pocket. Three of each.  Ink, stamps, embellishments, paper and envelopes.  I did have to dig out my scissors.  It makes three of each item.

                                    What fun!

Everything you need is included for the project that month.  Shhhh!  It's a surprise, you just know SU will make your kit special.  You can buy one to check it out or you can subscribe.  Can you imagine getting a box of creativity every month?  Read all about it here.

If you're interested and have questions, just ask!  I'm more than happy to help. Also I have a few catalogs that I can mail out if you'd like them.  Just drop me a line at elcgee@gmail.com

Thus ends my sales pitch for this week!

Where were you a year ago?

We were in Florida. Indiantown to be precise.  You've probably never been there because it's way out in the country.  You see our son in law was the Warden at the prison and we were parked in his and Sonsearae's backyard.  We went there so Jim could recover from his bypasses. Chris got a well deserved promotion and was transferred to Tallahassee.  So we were on the road again.

We love the area, Stuart is a charming city and Port St Lucie is a growing area for the retired set. We'll go back, I'm sure. We hope to winter there again. Who knows, maybe this year.

I'm still working on being pain free. Another visit to the VA and this time they think it's nerve related and not my hip (good news!).  Could be related to my back surgery....anyway lidocaine patches were procured and I'm using them.  Couldn't hurt, right?  On Monday I see a physical therapist and learn about a 'Tens Unit'. It's a muscle stimulator.  I've never heard of it and it will be interesting to use it.

Today we brought home two Lazy Boy rocker recliners.  We were due for new furniture and we both needed chairs that support our aging bones.  Perhaps this will help my nervy problem.

The resort is getting empty, on the 1st of March 57 rigs headed out.  Soon all the Winter Texans will be on the road heading to their northern homes.  Though the northern areas are still enjoying cold, snowy weather we are enjoying spring. The trees are flowering and seeing that green makes me happy.  Migration has also started and I look forward to seeing the birds fly through.  Haven't spotted a Robin yet.

All is right in our world
