Driving to Casper, Wyoming

We started our trip around 0930 yesterday and the first part of our trip was through the high plains and the scenery was pretty much flat with an occasional outcropping of stone. We traveled on hwy 120 through Meeteetse and Thermopolis. Not a lot of traffic and the drive was easy.

I kept a lookout for wildlife and we did see some! Antelope, deer and a golden eagle. Also saw a lot of cows! I can't help but wonder how many acres are needed to support one cow because the scrubby landscape looked pretty barren.

In Thermopolis we picked up hwy 20 (did you know it goes coast to coast?) and just inside the Wind River Canyon we stopped for lunch along the Wind River

The Canyon walls are spectacular and there are signs telling you how many millions of years old they are

This section of the road is in the Wind River Indian Reservation and each curve in the road brings more wonders to see. We were both impressed!

The River is on our right

As we came around another bend we saw a train coming then it disappeared

Turns out it had to come through this tunnel. there were several of them for the train and for us too on our side

Road work stopped us by the rushing waters so waiting wasn't difficult as we enjoyed the scenery

Soon we were led through the work zone and off of the reservation and into Boysen State Park. It is huge! And it turns out it's part of the Dam/Reservoir area. Lot's of camping and boating areas. I wonder what the rest of the canyon would look like without the reservoir filling it up.

Once we left the state park area we were again in the high plains heading towards Casper.

Clouds were building and chasing us as we drove east south east. We made one more stop to stretch but it was a quick one because those clouds were really black and catching us.

We made it to Ft Caspar Campground and still no rain but it was close!

As we pulled into our site the wind started blowing hard. Jim told me to get inside and he set up in the rain. We were level so he quickly chocked the tires and disconnected the truck and lowered the jacks. Electric and water then he came in almost soaked. Gotta love a man who cares enough for me to not let me help.

We had a cold beer and let the worst of the storm pass over us. Once the wind let up we raised the dish and had internet and TV in no time. Jim went back out and got the sewer connected so I could begin doing laundry. Our last two stops we didn't have full hookups.
We made a trip to Wal Mart to pick up some groceries and spent the evening watching TV. We thought we were going to have another storm but it passed us by.

Did you know if you click on a picture it will take you to a larger one?
